Founded by King Dom Sancho in 1226, Alijo is in the heart of the Douro wine valley. Named after Englishman James Forrester who played a vital role in the development of port wine, this pousada was opened in 1983. It is located among the famous “Quintas” (farms) and terraces where grapes are grown and the delicious wine is produced. Many of the local farms welcome guests for wine tasting or meals. The pousada has 21 guest rooms, a swimming pool and a tennis court.
